Weekly Poll: Worst Robot Butt-Monkey

Update: On the subject of the name of the show, I solicited the audience and asked for some suggestions. Since branding is really kind of important to get anything off the ground, I put some insistence on that in our social media circles. We’ve gotten some really great suggestions, and then it struck me that we have a name already; one that we use off-and-on with frustrating regularity. Flavor Text was what I called the show where I talk at the camera, but with the new Twitter handle, the show name really took hold. In this case, where three really cool, nerdy people share their opinions and commentary on a selection of nerdy topics, it occurred to me that Flavor Text may actually be the most appropriate. As I said on Facebook:
I went with Flavor Text because it’s something we have, that we’ve used, since the term spans card games, action figures, and video games, that means extra info on what we would consider a nerdy item. That’s what you guys do: supply additional info and commentary on nerdy items
I wanted to toss this explanation out there because I really, truly appreciated the great suggestions we got from within and without, but this seems like the best fit. So enjoy, and we’ll see you next week with another episode!
Tiff, Danielle, and Liz chat about Disney/Pixar’s Brave marketing disaster and the upcoming Riddick movie.
Part 2 of this discussion (including the S.H.I.E.L.D. show, and the doomed JLA movie) comes in next week.
I may need to consult more people before posting poll topics. This was such an utter failure, I’m not even going to discuss it. Let’s just move on.
This week’s poll is about the “butt-monkey.” As described on TV Tropes:
“…For whatever reason, the Butt Monkey seems to walk through life with a permanent “Kick Me” sign attached to their backs, invisible to them, but all too visible to the rest of the world. Nothing ever goes right for this character, and if something bad is going to happen to someone, chances are it’s going to happen to them. Long story short, it sucks to be the Butt Monkey.”
There are plenty of those in popular culture, but the question today is: which is the most egregious ROBOT butt-monkey? Tell us in the comments section below, and I might do a video response and read your comments and discuss them. But be sure to make your vote heard, so click!
This was a pretty surprising poll for me. TMNT destroyed the Ghostbusters 10-4! Apparently there’s some love for the pizza-eating sewer dwellers. And both franchises will probably have incredibly disappointing sequels coming up!
For our next poll, since it’s going to be a hard time for DC to move on a rebooted Batman franchise, let’s look at two options WB had before Batman Begins was an idea: adapting one of two Frank Miller opuses. That’s right, both Year One and Dark Knight Returns were in the consideration phase for Warners, and both probably would have been disasters.
But if Warners wanted to change things up and make a palette-cleansing movie for Batman between Dark Knight Rises and the inevitable franchise-continuing reboot, which Miller adaptation would you rather see?
